Coping with Christmas
Christmas is undoubtably a stressful time and keeping your head straight amidst the chaos can be tough. Find yourself losing the will and giving in, reaching for the mulled wine and mince pies?! Convincing yourself that it’s ok you’ll get back on track in the new year and you just can’t find the headspace to exercise and watch your eating over the festive period. Don’t worry you're not alone. Firstly don’t punish yourself as this will most likely end in a downward spiral of feeling rubbish and making you feel even more negative. Allow for the times you can’t always control everything. It’s not easy with an abundance of Christmas staff parties and lunches to opt out, but if you opt in and that’s a conscious decision you are still in control. Choosing to eat and drink whatever it may be is a choice! No one makes you do it and you are capable of saying no despite what you may think. So taking control of your decision is important to understand. If you approach Christmas with this attitude knowing that everything you do is a choice, you will feel more empowered. Obviously this should remain within reason but try it and see how you feel. The constant flow of cake and pastry based delights will tempt you. But choose when to indulge and when to refrain. The best way to avoid the arrival of January bringing with it depression and self loathing, is to stay in control.
Try and get a bit of head space during this time. Accept that calorie consumption will increase and enjoy it and don’t feel guilty. Keep on top of your exercise even if it’s greatly reduced. A run or walk up the hill can clear your head, burn some calories and boost your immune system. This way you mentally feel in a much better place, so that after Christmas you are better placed to tackle January and less likely to postpone what will feel like a much bigger mountain to climb.
